CARSHALTON ATHLETICS HISTORY
|
Mill Lane mission formally known as from the Croydon and District League, changes their name to Carshalton Athletic FC in the summer of 1905 and amalgamated with Carshalton St.Andrews at the end of the 1907/08 season. Between the wars the club played in various leagues including the Surrey Senior League and the London Leagues, before joining the Corinthian and then the Athenian League where they remained until 1973. the robins became founder members of the new Isthmian Division Two at that time and after struggling for two seasons they gained promotion to the Premier Division in 1976/77, winning the Surrey Senior Shield for good measure. In 1980-81
Carshalton enjoyed their most successful run in the FA Trophy when they reached the Third Round Proper before losing to Mossley. They reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup in 1969/70 and 1987/88, in 1982/83 they progressed to the Second Round before losing 4-1 to Fourth Division Torquay United.
In 1988/89 Carshalton won their first major honour in many years when they defeated Woking 4-2 in the final of the Surrey Senior Cup at Walton & Hersham's Stompond Lane Ground. This was the Robins first ever triumph in the County Cup and ended Sutton's domination of the competition for the last five years; they also recorded their highest ever final league placing in the Premier Division of fourth.
The following season Carshalton repeated their Surrey Senior Cup victory this time defeating Dorking 4-2 at Kingstonian's Kingsmeadow Stadium
Season 1990/91 was one of the longest in Carshalton's history with the first team playing 71 competitive matches and in the process reached the AC Delco and London Challenge Cup Finals and the semi-finals of the Surrey Senior and Premier Inter League Cup Competitions. Unfortunately the first team lost the Delco final to Woking 2-1 in front of that competitions largest ever crowd. The London Challenge Cup Final was somewhat devalued by being held over to be beginning of the next season but the club did win that competition by beating Welling 4-2. The same season the Reserve and Youth teams won the Suburban League Championship and Southern Youth League title respectively. In 1991/92 the Robins won the Surrey Senior Cup for the third time beating Egham 3-1 in the final at Sandy Lane, Tooting. The following season saw the club reach its best ever position in the Premier Division and again reach the Surrey Senior Cup Final losing to Sutton. 1993/94 saw the Robins top the table for a long spell of the season but they fell away towards the end and finally finished 6th, the club also had an excellent FA Cup run reaching the First Round Proper before losing to Barnet 2-1. In 1994/95 the Robins again reached the Surrey Senior Cup Final losing to Sutton in the final minutes, it also marked the end of an era with Billy Smith leaving the club for pastures new at Kingstonian.
The last four seasons have seen the Robins use five managers. John Rains produced an extremely successful side in the first season. The Robins having their best FA Trophy run for many years while also challenging for the Championship title, before dropping away at the end of the season, suffering from too many games over the season. The following season Robins appointed former England manager Tony Jennings to the Colston Avenue hot seat after John Rains moved onto Sutton, but Carshalton never really gelled under his management and he left in November. Towards the end of the season, with Carshalton facing a relegation battle, Carshalton appointed former player Chris Kilby, who had been coaching at Banstead, to manage the Robins. Kilby's arrival also coincided with the return to Colston Avenue of favourite Jimmy Bolton to add firepower to the Robins forward line. Carshalton eventually reached league safety and also the Surrey Senior Cup Final but lost to Crystal Palace on their own Colston Avenue ground
Season 1997/98 provided Carshalton with a good start to the season and continued until Christmas. The Robins reached the FA Cup First Round Proper again but as on previous occasions failed to draw a Football League side at home. Carshalton achieved a creditable home draw with Stevenage Borough before losing the replay. After the Christmas Carshalton fell away badly and Kilby resigned, towards the end of the season Carshalton appointed Ian Dawes as their new manager
Ian Dawes barely lasted four months in charge and following a disastrous 6-0 thrashing at home in the Fourth Qualifying Round against Salisbury also resigned. With the side a long way adrift at the bottom of the table Gary Bowyer took over as player manager guiding Carshalton to eventual safety in the league and the final of the Surrey Senior Cup where they lost to local rivals Sutton 3-0. Gary once again saw Carshalton to saftey the follwing year, on the last day of the 1999-2000 season with a 3-0 win over Aldershot.
The summer of 2000 was hectic and confusing. The sale of the club twice in a matter of weeks in conjunction with the destruction of the club house in an arson attack and the sacking of Gary Bowyer as manager. The new owners (Steve Friend & Barry Gartell) brought in Tony Rains from rivals Sutton as manager; who was previously with the Robins in the early nineties as assistant to his brother John, with barely 4 weeks before the new season was to start.
However by December and with 8 successive defeats that saw Carshalton drop into the relegation zone, Tony Rains was sacked. After considering a number of applications for the job, Steve Rogers was promoted from the Reserves to take charge with Paul Smallwood as his assistant, but the change did little to avert Carshalton's relegation to Division 1 after 24 years in the Premier.
At the end of the season on May 15th, Steve Rogers was told he was relieved of 1st team affairs and the search for a new Manager was begun and on June 19th Frank Murphy, formally of Hendon and Dulwich was appointed to spearhead Carshaltons' return to the Ryman Premier.
However on Mon 10th Dec Frank Murphy was sacked because the team were not progressing in the league, and on Wed 12th Graham Roberts was brought in to turn the tide towards the promotion places.

FACTS ABOUT THE ROBINS
Having lived in the town of Wood my entire life (38 years) and having grown up supporting and playing for the Woodchucks, I decided to put player stats, game information, and news up on the Internet for community members to access from their homes. I currently coach a high school basketball team here in Wood.
